HOW Amen to Action GOT ITS START.
2016-2017 was a year of milestones: the 200th birthday of the city of Pittsburgh, the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement, and the 50th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council.

Reflecting on the confluence of these events, a group of Pittsburgh church leaders and laymen and women began a series of prayer meetings to devise a vision for a major city-wide happening celebrating local reconciliation and unity in the Body of Christ.

Our shared goal was to connect people of all faiths, creating a platform of harmony and amassing spiritual capital more potent than “all the coal in the hills and steel in the mills—and that Pittsburgh would become a spiritual power plant for the rest of the world.”

Steel City to Kick Off The Season of Giving With Third Annual Amen to Action Event

Amen to Action Aims to Pack Over One Million Meals for Pittsburgh Area Hungry Again This Year

On Black Friday, a day that normally focuses on shopping, Amen to Action will, for the third consecutive year, break away from consumerism and instead focus on what really matters during the holiday season: giving back.

Amen to Action, an annual meal-packing event held on the day after Thanksgiving, will again partner with Meals of Hope and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to host thousands of volunteers at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The goal is to exceed the past two years and pack well over one million meals for Pittsburgh’s hungry and less fortunate. The same event last year surpassed the million-meal mark at 1,036,111 meals.

“Going on our third year, we hope to break our record yet again and pack the most meals to date,” said Reid Carpenter, founder of Leadership Foundations Inc. “It means the world to us to be able to impact the lives of so many in just one day.”

In 2017, Amen to Action was started by Carpenter, when he brought together his own network of local leaders, including Steve Popper, CEO and President of Meals of Hope. Carpenter’s vision of bringing together families who are celebrating the holidays to pack meals for the hungry, is expected to grow even more this year.

“Amen to Action is about coming together to give back to others, and we are beyond grateful for all of the volunteers that continue to help make this event a success,” Popper explained, reflecting on last year’s experience.

Amen to Action invites the community of Pittsburgh to register and/or donate to the third annual event taking place on Friday, November 29 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
