The Future is Now

Our young people are leading the way in changing their educational experiences, using art as activism, and finding ways to influence public policy and on-the-ground practices.

Here are just a few of the recent events and activities led by our TeenBloc students.

The Importance of Social Consciousness

Recently, our TeenBloc Coordinator led a workshop for 5th grade students at Urban Academy of Greater Pittsburgh Charter School titled, “Whatever Happened to Captain Planet?” The workshop focused on teaching younger children the importance of socially-conscious cartoons and the journey towards accurate representation of diverse identities on television.

Students viewed clips of different cartoons and discussed the multitude of social issues that were highlighted in each, including environmental justice, civil rights and gentrification.

If you are interested in hosting a workshop at your school or community group, contact Brandon McClendon at: 412-697-1298, ext. 104 or bmcclendon@aplusschools.org.

The Youth Block Podcast

Take a listen as several of our TeenBloc students introduce the program to listeners and talk about the CAPA gun violence walk-out, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Dreaming Radically Youth Conference, upcoming student organized teach-ins, and the “Black Panther” film.
