All cover fees go to Young Men and Women’s African Heritage Association, a north side nonprofit that has just launched Steel City Arts Initiative, or SCAI. SCAI is dedicated to engaging the Pittsburgh community through culture, arts, and educational programs, including teaching steel pans in local schools. This initiative provides children with the ability to grow through cultural identity, empowering our future leaders with a sense of determination, accomplishment, personal growth, and creative expression.

Phil’s Bio:
Born in British Guyana, Phil Solomon Steelpan builder, composer, arranger and innovator started making musical toys from tin cans at the age of seven. He would gather cans of all sizes and hammer them until they make different sounds. Phil became interested in music as a teenager and after hearing his first steelband decided that making, playing, arranging and composing for steelbands would be his lifelong commitment.

After moving to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, he started Solomon Steelpan Company making steelpans for schools and community programs throughout the country with outstanding programs in Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, North Dakota and West Virginia.

With his many bands he has performed at various venues throughout the states appearing on many TV features including Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. He was awarded a lifetime membership award in the Tri-M Music society, a music honor society of the National Association for Music Educators.
Today, his company Solomon Steelpan Company not only supplies Steelpans worldwide but also works with community based organizations, using them, as a means of engaging young people in music.
