NHCO Asking for Winter Coats for Adults and Children in Need

North Hills Community Outreach is collecting new and gently used winter coats for local families in need during September and October. All sizes are appreciated; children’s and adult XL and XXL are especially needed. Coats should be clean and have working zippers. Donations can be dropped off at NHCO Allison Park, 1975 Ferguson Road, Allison Park, PA 15101, Monday – Friday, 9am-4pm, during September and October and at the food pantry behind the building on Saturday, October 5 from 9am-noon. NHCO Seeking Senior Companions for County Program

Are you 55 or older? Are you interested in helping vulnerable older adults by visiting them in their homes? Are you able to serve between 15 and 40 hours per week? Consider becoming a Senior Companion! North Hills Community Outreach, an Area Agency on Aging Senior Companion Program Volunteer Station, is seeking Senior Companions to volunteer in northern Allegheny County. Senior Companions will earn a tax-free hourly stipend, meal allowance and mileage reimbursement for related travel, plus pre-service orientation, monthly training and supplemental accident and liability insurance while on duty. Senior Companions must meet certain income guidelines. The next Senior Companion Orientation is October 28-31. Schenley Shuffle 5k to Benefit Open Your Heart to a Senior

The Schenley Shuffle 5k Run/1-mile Walk and Brunch will be 8:00 a.m., September 21, at Bartlett Grove in Schenley Park, Oakland. This timed race benefits Open Your Heart to a Senior, a volunteer organization that helps seniors in Allegheny County remain safe in their homes by providing friendly visits, safety checks, rides to appointments, and more.  After the race, enjoy brunch and activities including yoga, a photo both, raffle baskets and lawn games. Open Your Heart to a Senior volunteers will be recognized during brunch and some seniors will be there to cheer on the runners. Open to all ages! Free Rides for Seniors along Freeport Road area

Seniors older than 60 can receive free rides to appointments, shopping and more along the Freeport Road area between Sharpsburg and Blawnox, Monday through Friday during the day. For rides, seniors can call 412-782-2001. Persons interested in volunteer driving or dispatching should contact Kerry at kkmulhern@nhco.org or call 412-449-0151. The Free Rides for Seniors Shuttle is a program of North Hills Community Outreach and sponsored by St. Margaret Foundation.

Free Home Safety Inspections Available for Seniors

Are you a senior living at home? Trained Safety for Seniors volunteers with Open Your Heart to a Senior will conduct a brief but thorough FREE home safety assessment using a written checklist making recommendations for family members to adjust/remove potential hazards. They install smoke alarms (if needed) and leave seniors with a bag of safety items, like a flashlight and fresh batteries, a bath mat, night light and other helpful items. After the check has been completed seniors qualify for either a free grab bar or an indoor railing installed at no charge. FREE Computer classes offered

North Hills Community Outreach offers FREE computer classes for those who need to learn computer basics, Word, Excel, Internet and more. Great for those who’ve never used a computer or who need to brush up for a job. Convenient locations in at Avalon Library and Millvale NHCO, various times. Community Auto, a program of North Hills Community Outreach, accepts vehicles in any condition, has them repaired, and sells them at below market value to local working families who need them to get to work. Volunteer Information Sessions at NHCO

Learn about volunteer opportunities at North Hills Community Outreach like teaching computer literacy classes, driving the senior shuttle, doing data entry, answering phones, sorting and distributing coats and other items, taking seniors to doctor appointments, and so much more!
