Volunteers Needed to Help Harvest Organic Produce

Open Volunteer Hours at NHCO’s Garden

The Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Garden, 119 Davis Avenue, Bellevue, a program of North Hills Community Outreach, has open volunteer hours through September, rain or shine. Open volunteer hours are all Mondays except Labor Day and the first, second and fourth Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., and third Thursday, 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Enjoy the outdoors and help grow and harvest organic produce for the 1,450 families who use NHCO’s two food pantries. NHCO winter coat drive is underway

North Hills Community Outreach is collecting new and gently used winter coats for local families in need through October 24. All sizes are appreciated; children’s and adult XL and XXL are especially needed. Coats should be clean and have working zippers. Donations can be dropped off at NHCO Allison Park, 1975 Ferguson Road, Hampton, Monday – Friday, 9am-4pm, through October 24, or in the NHCO Allison Park food pantry during special donation hours, 9:00 a.m. to noon, Saturday, September 27.  For more information, please contact Vicki at vdburst@nhco.org or 412-487-6316 opt 1.

NHCO pantries welcome excess garden produce

Gardeners with excess produce can donate it to North Hills Community Outreach’s two food pantries, which serve 1,450 local families in need each year. Produce can be dropped off at NHCO Allison Park, 1975 Ferguson Road, Hampton, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 pm weekdays, during special donation hours, 9:00 a.m. – noon, Saturday, September 27, or by appointment at other offices. Free legal consultation for families in need is available at North Hills Community Outreach locations one Wednesday of each month. All sessions are at 7:00pm. Upcoming ATA sessions are: NHCO Allison Park, September 10; NHCO Millvale October 8; and NHCO North Boroughs, November 12.  Attendees MUST preregister by contacting Harriet at hzgibbs@nhco.org or 412-408-3830. 

NHCO Volunteer Orientation and Information Sessions

North Hills Community Outreach has volunteer opportunities for people of all ages, skills, abilities and interests. Schenley Shuffle 5k set for September 13

The third annual Schenley Shuffle 5k will be September 13 at Bartlett Shelter, Schenley Park, Oakland.  This fun, low-key race benefits senior citizens in Allegheny County. All proceeds benefit the Heart of Gold Fund, which makes money available for the purchase of independence-enhancing items for seniors through the United Way’s Open Your Heart to a Senior program.  Your participation directly benefits older adults who need some extra assistance to continue living independently at home. The race is presented by the University of Pittsburgh Student Occupational Therapy Association. Registration fee is $20 and the first 100 registrants receive a free t-shirt. Well-behaved pets are welcome. Registration is at 8:00 a.m., race warm-up and yoga stretch begin at 8:30 a.m.and the race begins at 9:00a.m. There will be brunch and a raffle drawing at 10:00 a.m.Register online at www.schenleyshuffle14.eventbrite.com.

Community Auto Needs Cars Do you or does someone you know have an unwanted or unneeded vehicle? You could change someone’s life by donating your car to NHCO’s Community Auto program! Community Auto accepts vehicles in any condition. Cars are repaired and sold at low cost to low-income families who need a vehicle to get to work. Cars that can’t be repaired are sold at auction.
