Volunteer Leaf Rakers and Snow Shovelers Needed to Help Seniors

Seniors need volunteer leaf rakers, snow shovelers

Seniors in all neighborhoods in northern Allegheny County need volunteers to keep their yards and sidewalks safe by raking leaves and/or shoveling snow. This is a great project for teens, youth groups and families. Seniors who need assistance may also contact Cathy at the above number.

 APPRISE offers FREE Medicare Open Enrollment events and counseling

APPRISE, Pennsylvania’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program, is offering private, one-on-one appointments to help clients understand Medicare and Medicaid benefits and make informed decisions about health care options.

Appointments will be held at FREE open enrollment event: Tuesday, October 27, Orchard Hill Church, 2551 Brandt School Road, Wexford, PA 15090 and Thursday, November 5, AGH-Suburban General Hospital, 100 S. Jackson Street, Bellevue, PA 15202.

Trained staff and volunteers from the Allegheny County APPRISE program will help attendees understand their options. To reserve an appointment, call APPRISE at 412-661-1438. APPRISE is a free, public service of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.

NHCO Annual Thanksgiving Food Collection is October 12- November 13

North Hills Community Outreach is collecting food items to create complete Thanksgiving meals to distribute to local families in need. Last year, nearly 800 local families received nourishing Thanksgiving meals. Items that make a meal include: grocery store gift cards of at least $10 for turkey purchase, large boxes of stuffing mix and instant mashed potatoes, canned cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, easy pumpkin pie mix, evaporated milk, muffin mix, turkey gravy mix and napkins. Donations are accepted through November 13, but preferably before October 23 for a timely distribution. NHCO Holiday Gift Collection starts November 11

North Hills Community Outreach is accepting new toys, games, sporting equipment, sports apparel and gift cards for children ages birth through 18, from November 11 through December 11; earlier donations are encouraged! Gifts appropriate for teens are especially needed. Donations can be dropped off at NHCO, 1975 Ferguson Road, Allison Park, PA 15101, Monday – Friday, 9am-4pm, and at the food pantry behind the building, 9am-noon, Saturdays, November 28 (day after Black Friday) and December 5.  Ask the Attorney sessions for low-income families

Free legal consultation for issues such as divorce, bankruptcy, credit issues, family matters, rent disputes and more is available for families in need at North Hills Community Outreach locations the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm. The next ATA session is: NHCO Millvale November 11. There is no ATA session in December. Attendees MUST preregister for these sessions by contacting Harriet at hzgibbs@nhco.org or 412-408-3830.

NHCO Volunteer Orientations

North Hills Community Outreach will host a Volunteer Orientation session at 10 am, Thursday, November 12 in NHCO Allison Park, 1975 Ferguson Road. There are no sessions in December. Volunteers are needed for all sites, and needs include receptionists, data entry, drivers for Free Rides for Seniors shuttles or to transport seniors in their own vehicles to appointments, drivers to transport pantry donations, and much more. Do you or a family member have a car you don’t need or want? No matter what the condition, your old vehicle can help a working family! Consider donating it to Community Auto, a program of North Hills Community Outreach. Community Auto accepts vehicles in any condition, has them repaired, and sells them at below market value to local working families who need them to get to work.
