United Way and Fred Rogers Company celebrate workplace volunteerism on March 19

Nine companies to be honored for their efforts in the community

United Way of Allegheny County, in partnership with The Fred Rogers Company, is celebrating the legacy of Fred Rogers on March 19, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Pittsburgh CAPA. The event will recognize the work of nine local organizations that demonstrate a strong commitment to workplace volunteerism, along with the impactful work of volunteers throughout the community.

Corporate honorees include:  Bank of America; Deloitte LLP; FedEx Ground; W.W. Grainger Inc.; Giant Eagle, Inc.; Hefren-Tillotson, Inc.; KPMG LLP; Painters and Allied Trade District Council 57; and PPG Industries.

Combined, over 400 employees participated in a range of United Way activities to help the community. Corporate volunteers attended Be There attendance challenge kickoffs to encourage positive school attendance, created meaningful relationships through Open Your Heart to A Senior, built bikes for local kids and made the community a brighter place by painting houses during Days of Caring.

“Our volunteers give so much more than just their time to help the community,” said Christy Stuber, volunteer initiatives director, United Way of Allegheny County.  “With each commitment, they show incredible kindness and devotion to helping others.”

United Way of Allegheny County relies on the work of over 3,500 volunteers who dedicate approximately 55,000 hours each year to helping people across the region via key impact areas – financially struggling families, children and youth, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities.

This is the fifth year for the event.  The tradition of celebrating Mister Rogers’ birthday began in 2008 as “Won’t You Be My Neighbor Day” which was part of “Pittsburgh 250.”

“Our company is delighted to join with United Way of Allegheny County in honoring these outstanding volunteers.  Their service to the community highlights the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors,” said William Isler, president of The Fred Rogers Company.
