Transition Works Program Celebrates Students

Joshua Getkin of Penn Trafford School District worked closely with Sheryl Shevchik, Redstone Highlands Food Service Manager, throughout the Transition WORKS! program. Getkin received skills training in Redstone’s dietary aid department.

Redstone Highlands and Goodwill of Southwestern PA celebrated the success of its first group of Transition WORKS! high school students during a special event at Redstone’s Greensburg campus Thursday.

Students recognized at the event included Emilee Aquilina, Taylor Eckels, Stephanie Lynch, Ashley Suter and Joshua Cook from Yough School District and Brandi Sembower and Joshua Getkin of Penn Trafford School District. Some of the students will graduate from high school this month, others will continue on with the program and at least one student may join Redstone as a permanent employee following high school graduation. “Transition WORKS! has been a win-win for both the students and Redstone,” Redstone Highlands Vice President of Human Resources, Jim Hodge said. “They are receiving the training they need to enter the workforce and we’ve been able to enhance some of our departments throughout the process. I believe those who were involved with the program here at Redstone have learned just as much from the participants as they have from us.” The Transition WORKS! program is designed to provide occupational skills training opportunities for youth (ages 16-21) who are experiencing barriers to employment due to disabilities. As a sponsoring employer, Redstone has provided a variety of job opportunities and skills training its dietary aid and nursing and rehabilitation departments, among others.
