Violence and Abuse

Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh launched a new education campaign last week.   The campaign is the monthly release by email of a video vignette in which an intimate partner violence survivor, perpetrator or witness tells the violent story that they have long kept hidden.  The video will be posted on our webpage where it will remain for public viewing.  Viewers can participate in surveys, polls and community discussion boards based on the video.

It is estimated that for every 1,000 women attending a college or university this year, there will be 35 incidents of rape according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.  Of the women assaulted, 33.7% will be victimized on campus and 66.3% off campus.  Many of these women will know their attacker.  It may be a friend, fellow student, or perhaps, a teacher.

Crisis Center North  will hold it’s third Annual Cocktails & Cuisine for Women in Crisis fundraiser May 6, 2010, from 6 – 10 p.m. at The Woodlands in Bradford Woods.
