Steps to Independence (STI), began in 1998 as Conductive Education of Pittsburgh.  We are an organization of professionals and parents offering summer and school-year programs for children ages 2-21 with motor disabilities. Conductive Education emphasizes active learning in groups of four to ten students and is led by highly trained educators known as conductors. Rather than using assistive devices such as wheelchairs and walkers, children use specially designed wooden furniture to practice a wide range of motor skills.

Originally developed in the 1940s by Hungarian neurologist Dr. Andras Peto, Conductive Education is now practiced worldwide, and we are fortunate to have this resource available for children in Western Pennsylvania. The curriculum focuses on building physical capabilities while incorporating social skills. The program features encouraging engagements with peers through games and competitions. Conductors discuss a variety of topics with students including days of the week, sports, news and math skills. The goal is to develop a sense of awareness of their daily environment. The students build their voice through song, speech, and vocalization, which may include children communicating through sign or with device assistance. Through much hard work, they develop signs so that they can express themselves.

STI has offered a summer camp for the past 13 years.  The program has recently expanded to include a successful year-round preschool program.
