Seniors Share Stories With Students and Adult Mentors

North Hills Community Outreach’s Faith in Action program, part of the Open Your Heart to a Senior program funded by United Way, helped bring together three generations from different backgrounds on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

As part of their student leadership/career mentoring day-long program honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., FAME students and FEDEX ground visited seniors in Bellevue. The groups exchanged stories about family, sports, world travel, pets, careers, goals and dreams. By day’s end, three generations learned that age has little to do with the ability to form friendships.

Twenty-eight students from FAME, 12 adult mentors from FEDEX, 3 staff/administrators (FAME and FEDEX) visited with 16 seniors at MetTowers in Bellevue, chatting and visiting in the residents’ apartments. This is the fourth year that NHCO partnered with FEDEX Ground for an intergenerational service activity

The students all receive scholarships from FAME, which enable them to attend area private schools, including Shady Side Academy, Sewickley Academy, Ellis School, St. Edmunds, and others.
