RiverQuest has been selected to receive a 2013 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.
Among 15 other Pennsylvania projects that encourage and promote environmental stewardship, RiverQuest is recognized this year for the “Exploring the Marcellus Shale” Outreach Program. Launched during the 2011-12 school year, the program uses a variety of hands-on activities, images and group discussion to help tell the story of the Marcellus Shale, and the basic science behind hydraulic fracturing of shale to extract natural gas.
As an informational and educational program, the content includes both the pros and cons of the topic, from the environmental to the economic. The session aims to provide or enhance participants’ knowledge of the topic so that they can better understand what they read and hear about Marcellus Shale drilling, and to fashion more informed opinions.
