Pittsburgh Residents Bake Thousands of Cookies for Colon Cancer 4th Annual “Cookies4Chris” Event Set for March 2

National non-profit the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation, in partnership with the UPMC Cancer Centers is pleased to host the sweet yet popular event the 4th Annual “Cookies4Chris” taking place on Sunday, March 2, from 11-3PM at the South Hills Country Club in Pittsburgh

The “world famous” Pittsburgh cookie table is a long time tradition in Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh weddings of offering homemade cookies lovingly baked by family and friends to each guest as a personal thank you.  The Foundation is named after Christine “Chris” Sapienza, a Pittsburgh native, loving wife, mother, musician and small business owner who touched many lives and lost her battle with colon cancer.  Chris’ son, Michael Sapienza created the Foundation.  Chris was well known for sharing her specialty treats to many such occasions.  Weeks leading up to the Cookies4Chris event, Pittsburgh residents of all ages spend countless hours baking, decorating and coordinating thousands of hand crafted treats that will create the elaborate cookie display.  Last year, approximately 4,200 cookies were made (350 dozen).

The luncheon will also include local vendors, auctions, live entertainment, and door prizes. Theevent will be emceed by Shelley Duffy, co-host of 100.7 Star Morning Show & KDKA Lifestyle Editor.   This year’s event is on pace to sell out with approximately 300 guests in attendance.  Last year’s event sold out weeks prior, attracting over 250 guests.

The principal mission of the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation is to permanently eliminate the threat of colon cancer through discovery of a cure.  Chris4Life is committed to significantly improving the treatment experience for patients and caregivers, and to dramatically raise awareness about colon cancer in general.

Last year, Chris4Life successfully launched a national awareness campaign titled ‘Love Your Butt’, that gained tremendous media and viral attention giving attention to how important it is to get screened.  The campaign will be wide spread in Pittsburgh in March during National Colon Cancer Awareness month.

The Pittsburgh area ranks high in the nation to lives lost to colon cancer.  Overall, colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths for men and women combined.  This year, there will be around 140,000 new cases of colorectal cancer in the United States and of those around 47,000 will pass away.  If caught early, colorectal cancer is 90% preventable.

Tickets are on sale for only $35.  Proceeds from the event will benefit the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation’s research fund that Chris4Life has set up with UPCI/UPMC Cancer Centers as well as Patient Treatment & Care Programs.  Sponsors of this year’s event are Genentech, Askesis, Klavon’s Ice Cream Parlor, Federated Investors Foundation, Dean Honda, Supercuts, and Frank Sapianza.   EVENT DETAILS
