News for January from North Hills Community Outreach NHCO

Safety for Seniors

Trained Safety for Seniors volunteers with Open Your Heart to a Senior conduct a brief but thorough home safety assessment using a written checklist making recommendations for family members to adjust/remove potential hazards. They install smoke alarms (if needed) and leave seniors with a bag of safety items, like a flashlight and fresh batteries, a bath mat, night light and other helpful items. After the check has been completed seniors qualify for either a free grab bar or an indoor railing installed at no charge. For information, please contact Cathy Pschirer 412-307-0069 at North Hills Community Outreach.

Snow Shoveling Volunteers Needed  for Open Your Heart to a Senior   There are times when a senior is trapped at home by heavy snow and needs to get out for a medical appointment. Or maybe the senior needs to have his snow cleared so that a home health worker or meal delivery can get to the door. Volunteer now to help shovel snow for seniors this winter!  To learn more, please contact Open Your Heart to a Senior  at 412-307-0071, toll-free at 866-467-0888 or seniors@nhco.org.

WorkAble Program WorkAble is a new program serving unemployed and underemployed people throughout Allegheny County, especially those newly struggling, those who are one event away from crisis, and struggling single female households. WorkAble is a United Way-funded partnership

between North Hills Community Outreach, South Hills Interfaith Ministries and Jewish Family & Children Services. Professional employment counselors will be at North Hills Community Outreach’s Millvale office on Tuesdays and NHCO’s Allison Park office on Wednesdays. Job seekers can receive encouragement and help with resumes and cover letters, interviewing, job search and computer skills. People who need assistance can call the WorkAble hotline at 412-904-5993. Volunteer employment coaches are needed. Upcoming trainings will be at NHCO Millvale January 10 at 6pm, and NHCO Allison Park January 17 at 10am.
