Making Miracles Achievable

6 year-old, James used crutches sparingly, usually opting to crawl or settle in one spot. Like most adolescent boys, his brothers play baseball nearly every night. After discovering the Miracle League of the South Hills, a baseball program that allows children of all abilities to take the field, James’ parents were thrilled that he was going to get his turn to run the bases. At his first game, James didn’t crawl or use crutches, he ran. Slowly, deliberately James puts one foot in front of the other, a lesson to all of us that anything we believe in is achievable. James is one of more than 140 baseball players in the Miracle League of the South Hills, a facility and program uniquely designed so that everyone has an opportunity to participate. The field located at Boyce Mayview Park is designed with a completely flat rubberized surface, handicap accessible bathrooms and dugouts. What makes the Miracle League special is that players are paired with buddies who help them hit the ball, run the bases or just cheer them home. As a result, the Miracle League isn’t just about baseball but the community it creates.
