Just Harvest to Premiere “Food Stamped” Film in Pittsburgh

Documentary of filmmakers’ attempt to eat healthy on food stamps will screen at June 21 meeting

At its annual meeting scheduled for 6:00 p.m., June 21 at United Steelworkers (60 Blvd of the Allies) local anti-hunger nonprofit Just Harvest will present the Pittsburgh premiere of the award-winning documentary ‘Food Stamped.’

The meeting and screening are free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.  The film will follow an annual board election and state-of-the-organization address by board President Sister Barbara Finch.

Food Stamps (now officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP) provide an important line of defense against hunger.  But is it one that’s strong enough to support a healthy diet?

That was the question on the minds of husband-and-wife filmmaking team Shira and Yoav Potash of San Francisco, Calif.  In their new documentary, ‘Food Stamped,’ they decided to put Shira’s cooking knowhow as a nutrition educator to the test by attempting to eat healthfully for one week on an average food stamp allotment – about $1.00 per meal in their case.

The Potashes weave their own narrative throughout a thorough, personable and often funny examination of many broader questions about to hunger and related public policy.  Through interviews with low-income recipients of assistance, policymakers, and anti-hunger advocates and agency staff, they take looks at why unhealthy food is cheaper than healthy options, and the difficulties of navigating state bureaucracy when applying for food stamps.  The filmmakers offer up additional sidebars with coverage of community strategies against hunger, such as farmers’ markets that accept food stamps, and programs like free and reduced-price school meals.

“We were thrilled to find out about ‘Food Stamped,’” said Just Harvest Communications Coordinator Adam MacGregor.  “Just about every topic that Shira and Yoav cover is a major focus area for Just Harvest.  It was an obvious match, and a very timely topic since Food Stamp funding and the very structure of the program are set to be hot-button issues in Congress this year.”

‘Food Stamped’ is the winner of Best Documentary Jury Prize at the 2011 Lighthouse International Film Festival held in Long Beach Island, N.J.
