GPLC Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council (GPLC) is celebrating its 30th anniversary of providing life-changing educational programs to adults and families.  Among the events planned for this anniversary are the following: –  On Founder’s Day, August 28, a ceremony was held in the Mt. Lebanon Public Library to commemorate the anniversary.  GPLC was founded by a volunteer in her home in Mt. Lebanon. –  On September 7, a GED graduation ceremony was held to honor 50 GED graduates from GPLC programs. –  On November 1, GPLC holds the 25th annual Leaders for Literacy Luncheon at the Fairmont Pittsburgh.  This year’s honorary chairman is Dan Onorato, former county executive of Allegheny County and currently senior vice president of Highmark.  The guest speaker will be Nelson Lauver, a nationally known storyteller and broadcaster who didn’t learn to read until the age of 29. –  Discover GPLC is a new series of tours for visitors to understand the wide range of GPLC programs. Also, during this anniversary, GPLC will be conducting a recruitment campaign for volunteers and donors.  GPLC suggests that new donors consider a gift of $30 in recognition of the 30 years of service that the organization has provided.  Billboards and print advertising will be included in this campaign.
