Donations of food and school supplies needed at NHCO

North Hills Community Outreach is seeking nonperishable, non-expired food, as well as fresh garden produce, for its three food pantries. New backpacks and back-to-school supplies are also needed through August 8. Donations may be dropped off at any NHCO office, M-F, 9am-4pm,  including the main office, 1975 Ferguson Road, Allison Park, PA 15101 or in the pantry behind the main building, Saturday, August 8, 9a.m.-noon. Children’s Artwork Submissions Requested for NHCO Calendar

Art submissions for North Hills Community Outreach “People Helping People” 2016 Calendar will be accepted through August 31. Children entering grades K-6 are invited to submit artwork on 8 ½ x 11 horizontal paper using the theme “People Helping People.” The calendar will be sold as a fundraiser. Thirteen pictures will be chosen for inclusion in the calendar, and other artwork may be used on social media. Shaler North Hills Library will host a reception for all artists who submit artwork and all submissions will be displayed during November in the library. Schenley Shuffle now has 1-mile fun walk and 5k to benefit seniors in need

The fourth annual Schenley Shuffle 5k Run/Walk, presented by Open Your Heart to a Senior and the University of Pittsburgh Student Occupational Therapy Association, will begin at 8:00 am, Saturday, September 26 at Bartlett Shelter, Schenley Park, Oakland. New this year is a one-mile fun walk.  The event website is SchenleyShuffle.com.  Well-behaved pets are welcome.

Proceeds support the Heart of Gold Fund, which provides household goods to seniors in need in Allegheny County. In the past year, the Heart of Gold Fund supplied microwaves, space heaters and shoes to local senior citizens who were doing without.

In addition to the run and walk, the day’s festivities will include warm-up stretches led by a local yoga instructor, and post-race hula hooping. A $50 gift card will be given to each of the fastest male and fastest female runners. All participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt.

Volunteers needed for NHCO’s senior programs

Dedicated volunteers are needed to provide free services to seniors in northern Allegheny County through the North Hills Community Outreach In Service of Seniors program. Caring volunteers are matched with seniors ages 60 and older to provide transportation to medical appointments, the grocery store or food pantry or shopping for the senior, friendly visiting, telephone reassurance calls, seasonal leaf raking and snow shoveling, and driving or dispatching one of our Free Rides for Seniors shuttles.  For more information about volunteering, please call Cathy at 412-307-0069 ext 3313.

Open Volunteer Hours in NHCO Garden

NHCO’s Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Garden at 119 Davis Ave in Bellevue has open volunteer hours Mondays 10am-2pm and Thursdays 9am-1pm, rain or shine. Help is needed tending the garden, raking, weeding, watering, and eventually harvesting organic fruits and vegetables that go to NHCO’s three food pantries and transporting the food. NHCO Volunteer Orientations

North Hills Community Outreach will host a Volunteer Orientation session at 10 am, Thursday, August 13 in NHCO Millvale, 416 Lincoln Ave and 6 pm, Thursday, September 10 in NHCO Allison Park, 1975 Ferguson Road. Volunteers are needed for all sites, and needs include drivers for Free Rides for Seniors shuttles, receptionists, volunteers to tend garden, drivers to transport pantry donations and garden produce, and much more. Ask the Attorney sessions for low-income families

Free legal consultation is available for families in need at North Hills Community Outreach locations the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm. Upcoming ATA sessions are: NHCO Millvale August 12 and NHCO North Boroughs September 9. Attendees MUST preregister for these sessions by contacting Harriet at hzgibbs@nhco.org or 412-408-3830.

Donate your vehicle to Community Auto: working families are waiting to purchase a car!

Do you or a family member have a car you don’t need or want? No matter what the condition, your old vehicle can help a working family!
