Pittsburgh to Get ‘Moving’ for Parkinson’s Disease

The National Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania (NPFWPA) is holding Moving Day, a fundraising walk for Parkinson’s disease (PD) on Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Highland Park Reservoir. Moving Day is more than just a walk; it highlights movement and exercise as a symbol of hope and progress because they are essential in treating Parkinson’s disease. The money raised will help improve the lives of PD patients and families affected by the disease.

This celebration of movement will feature a family friendly walk course, a kids area, a caregivers relaxation tent and a special Movement Pavilion featuring yoga, dance, Tai Chi, Pilates, and more—all of which are proven to help manage the symptoms of PD.

With an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 new cases each year in the United States, approximately one person every nine minutes is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD). With one in 300 people having the disease, there are about 10,000 people in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area with PD.

Last year’s event raised more than $116,000, and the goal for the 2014 event is $120,000. Moving Day helps the NPFWPA provide education and resources, offer outreach programming, support research on Parkinson’s-related treatment, train healthcare professionals dealing with Parkinson’s and raise awareness with government officials and communities throughout the United States.
