Have you ever thought about volunteering but don’t know what to do? If so, please consider helping your neighbors through Faith in Action.
Faith in Action brings volunteers of different faiths together to care for their homebound neighbors who may be isolated and living with chronic health conditions or disabilities.
Recently, there have been several requests made to the local chapter in Sewickley, PA. These neighbors are asking for someone to give them a break from their role as caregiver once or twice a week. This would involve just being there, providing companionship for someone while the caregiver is out for a few hours, and in some cases, heating up some prepared food for a meal.
Another neighbor needs someone to help with laundry/dishes once a week, or to provide some light housekeeping every couple of weeks.
We have someone else who needs help with yard work and trimming.
And we always need people willing to take someone to a doctor’s appointment!
Can you volunteer and give these folks a hand? Let us know, and tell your friends about these opportunities to help the elderly in our communities. Call 412-741-9622 x 135 or email aberger@sewickleyymca.org.

Faith in Action at the Sewickley Valley YMCA brings together people of many faiths to help their neighbors in need. Their hard working staff and volunteers really do accomplish
Mission Incredible
· “I am so grateful for all of you.”
· “Of course I will take him. He is such a nice man.”
· “Oh what a beautiful girl my driver was today….just like my daughter.”
· “I just called to let you know I am available all next week if you need anyone to drive. “
· “She waited with me the whole appointment even though I told her she didn’t need to. We had so much fun just laughing.”
· “We gave him a pie because he is always so willing to help out.”
· “I think I could change my schedule to do that.”
The above are all snippets of phone conversations I’ve had with people, care receivers and drivers, in the first month of working with the Faith in Action Drivers Corps.
I must admit that when I first joined Faith in Action I thought to myself, “Is this Mission Impossible?” Will we be able to care for everyone? How will we find enough volunteers to go around? Does it work? Who will be able to drive? Will our care receivers get to all the places they desperately need to be?
And much to my delight, I discovered just how well Faith in Action works. It is Mission Incredible. Each day I am wowed by the goodhearted people, care receivers and volunteers alike, who keep Faith in Action moving along like a well- oiled machine, simply by working together as neighbors. Appointments are kept, relationships develop, stories are shared, needs are met, friends are made, and lives and communities are strengthened.
Thanks to all of you who make a difference in each other’s lives. And thanks, too, for making me a believer.
