Community Education at Carlow

Nieves Stiker, Director of Community Education, Carlow University has been named the March Champion by Pittsburgh’s Dignity and Respect Campaign for her work in empowering women and changing lives. 

The Dignity and Respect Champion Award is presented to, and honors, a person identified as one who has made a difference in promoting inclusion, dignity and respect in the communities where they live and work. 

Mary Curet of UPMC nominated Ms. Stiker saying, “She has worked tirelessly to provide opportunity for single parents, displaced homemakers and women in general.  She has affected many lives and given ‘belief in oneself’ back to many women.  I applaud her quiet strength and resolve to make a difference to women in our community.” 

For over ten years, Ms. Stiker has worked closely with single parents and women in transition, fulfilling Carlow University’s original mission “to click to continue

The Community Education at Carlow University, a nonprofit organization in Pittsburgh, provides programs can help.  

The New Choices Career Development  

This program is designed to assist single parents and displaced homemakers to achieve their personal, educational and financial goals.  Classes will be offered in Downtown Pittsburgh and at the Shaler High School, starting February 15th, 2010. Morning and evening classes are available.

Program includes:

  • Interest and Proficiency assessments
  • Goal Setting and Career Ladder Plan
  • Self-Esteem Inventory and Confidence Building
  • Communication, Assertiveness and Negotiation Skills
  • Job Readiness and Job Searching Skills
  • Computer Literacy
  • Basic and Advanced Software Training
  • Medical Terminology
  • Stress Reduction Techniques 
  • How to Manage Time and Finances 

College Prep classes 

Classes will be offered in Downtown Pittsburgh, starting February 9th, 2010.  Early afternoon and evening classes are available.  This program develops the necessary skills to succeed in Post-Secondary Education.

 Program inicludes:

  • Reading/Writing
  • Mathematics
  • Study skills
  • Time management
  • Goal Setting 

Basic Adult Education and preparation for the GED tests 

Classes will be offered at the Downtown, Millvale and  Bethel  Park sites. Open entry/Open exit. Morning, afternoon and evening classes are available. Tutoring is also available by appointment.      

Classes include:

Math and Language Brush-up

  • Mathematics
  • Reading/ Writing
  • Ged tests practice
  • Workplace Development

Here is another great example of two nonprofit organizations collaborating to enrich the lives of others.

Treasure House Fashions hosted a “Girls Night Out” on December 7th for Carlow University Community Education’s New Choices program.  This event provided our first semester students with the opportunity to acquire interviewing and business apparel at no cost.  They also enjoyed light hors d’oeuvres which were provided by the instructors from the New Choices program.  

Over the past three years Treasure House Fashions has provided this enjoyable evening to over a hundred New Choices students – making their transition to self-sufficiency more affordable and fun!
