ACHIEVA

Please join The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh as they host   This event will take place from November 11-14, 2009 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh!

The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh is the heart and soul of the ACHIEVA family of organizations.  ACHIEVA, formerly Arc Allegheny, is western Pennsylvania’s largest provider of comprehensive services and supports for children and adults with disabilities and their families

This year’s convention is shaping up to be the best convention yet.  There will be speakers and panel discussions focusing on social media, inclusive recreation and employment, to name just a few.

Best-selling author, entrepreneur and motivational speaker Stedman Graham, will discuss his experiences as a sibling to two brothers with disabilities.

An array of informative panel discussions and speakers will take place at this year’s event as well as a variety of social activities and events.

  • Friday night there will be a dance while cruising along Pittsburgh’s rivers.
  • A competitive Wii tournament will take place for which The University of Pittsburgh will adapt Wii controllers. This  is sure to be a hit.
  • On Noverber 13th the Night at the Museum will take place. This is an exciting fun-filled event and strolling dinner at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s newly renovated Dinosaur Hall. After viewing the extraordinary dinosaur exhibit-one of the premiere exhibits in the country-guests can visit the North American Wildlife Hall and the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems, a dazzling exhibit!

Through the generosity of several benefactors, we are pleased to be able to offer scholarships to self advocates and families that will cover the cost of a three-day registration. Scholarship applicants must be residents of Pennsylvania and submit a letter stating why they wish to attend the conference. Scholarships will be awarded to families throughout Pennsylvania.

We’re also pleased to offer a host family program for convention attendees called the “Home Away From Home” program. Our staff will match host and visiting families based on their responses to questionnaires.

For more information on any of the activities mentioned or the conference in general, contact Cathy Downs at 1 (888) 272-7229 x460 or via email: cdowns@achieva.info.
