CASA of Westmoreland Recruiting Volunteers for Abused/Neglected Children

CASA of Westmoreland, Inc. (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is a volunteer-based organization providing a voice in the courts on behalf of abused and neglected children in Westmoreland County that will assist the courts in determining the child’s placement in safe, permanent and nurturing homes.  These volunteers work to ensure the safety and stability of children, through collaboration with a variety of service providers, as they progress through the court system.  A loving, secure, and permanent family is always the goal for every child.

There are on average over 300 children in foster care every year in Westmoreland County.  CASA had the volunteer capacity to serve about 200 of those children.  CASA’s goal is to have a CASA volunteer for every child in placement.  There are no requirements to becoming a CASA volunteer other than being 21 years of age or older.

The children served by CASA are those who have been victims of abuse and/or neglect by their parents or caretakers.  CASAs are trained volunteers who research the best interest of children involved in Family Court proceedings.  These volunteers work on only one or two cases at a time and devote their time to getting to know the child, their needs and wishes, and their family.  After conducting their independent evaluation of a child’s case, the volunteers submit a report outlining their findings to the court and provide a voice for the child.

Anyone who would like more information about becoming a CASA volunteer can call 724-850-6874 or visit www.westmorelandcasa.org.
