Borough of Wilkensburg Hosts Public Meeting on Liquor License Referendum

The Borough of Wilkinsburg will hold a special public meeting about liquor licensing on at 5:30 p.m., on Jan. 9, 2013, to garner input and answer questions about a proposed referendum enabling borough restaurants to apply for (R) liquor licenses from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The meeting will be held at the Wilkinsburg Borough Building, 605 Ross Avenue. A representative from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board will be present.

Last year, the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation (WCDC) announced that it will seek to get the proposed referendum on the May 21 primary election ballot. The WCDC Board of Directors is pursuing (R) liquor licenses as part of the Business District Revitalization Plan adopted by the Borough of Wilkinsburg in June, 2010. The WCDC believes restaurant licenses can attract new businesses to Wilkinsburg and increase investment in the area.

From Feb. 19 to March 12, the WCDC will seek to collect the 2,010 signatures needed to get the referendum on the ballot. If the required number of signatures is gathered, the referendum will be included on the primary election ballot late this spring.

The Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation was formed in June, 2008 with a mission to revitalize Wilkinsburg and surrounding areas through business and residential development, organizational and individual civic leadership, and cultural enrichment.
