Annette Philip Featured in Lincoln Park Free Concert

Vocalist from India sings blues at free Lincoln Park concert

What happens when a young female vocalist from India interprets American jazz and rhythm and blues songs? That question will be answered Jan. 12, when Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center hosts a free concert entitled the Red Hot R&B Revue.

Winston Maccow and Annette Philip, two accomplished musical artists associated with the Berklee College of Music in Boston, will lead Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School music students in a 7:30 p.m. concert in the 750-seat mainstage theater.

The Red Hot R&B Revue is free but tickets are required. The box office may be contacted at 724.643.9004.

Winston Maccow is a bassist, arranger, composer, clinician, educator and producer with more than 30 years of performance, recording and teaching experiences to his credit. Annette Philip is an Indian vocalist, composer/arranger, recording artist and choral conductor known for experimenting with the human voice.

Both are associate professors of music at Berklee College of Music. They will teach a workshop for 25 Lincoln Park music students who will perform in the concert. The show features special musical  arrangements by Maccow.

As a guest performer at the concert, Lincoln Park will welcome back jazz guitarist Levi Keller, a 2011 Lincoln Park graduate from Mars, Pa., now attending Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship.

Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center last year joined the 32-member Berklee City Music Network, a network of arts organizations across the country which use the Berklee PULSE method to teach music to underserved children through the contemporary songs that young Americans listen to every day.

Maccow has arranged music for Marlena Shaw, Les Hodges, and Liz Withers, has shared the stage with Nancy Wilson, The Whispers, New Sound Workshop/Heirs To Jobim, Patti Austin, George Duke, Dennis Chambers and Russell Ferrante.

He plays with a group of five career musicians and composers in the group Last Trip, fusing jazz with African, Caribbean and contemporary styles. He has put on music clinics in Argentina, the Azorés, Brazil, Denmark, Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico, Spain, St. Martin and Taiwan.

Philip attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass., on full scholarship, receiving her degree in professional music in 2009 with an emphasis on improvisation, composition and arranging. She joined Berklee’s vocal music department in 2010 as a faculty member and ensemble director.

In 2003, she co-founded Artistes Unlimited (AU) in New Delhi, India, a performing arts ensemble promoting collaboration among musicians in the city. With a repertoire spanning genres of jazz, rock, R&B, funk, acappella, Gospel, Indian and Western Classical, Sufi and folk music, AU is now India’s largest and most diverse youth platform for musicians, with a rotating line up of over 250 artists.

She records and performs with her own jazz fusion ensemble, The Annette Philip Group, which incorporates music traditions from around the world, tours with the Boston-based vocal group “Women of the World,” and works with a big band called The Makanda Project.
