Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s Helps Reclaim the Future for Millions

Participants Raise Critically Needed Funds for Alzheimer’s Care, Support and Research

The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting southwestern Pennsylvania residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®.  Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Saturday, October 11, at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh’s North Shore neighborhood.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for nearly 4,000 participants inthe Pittsburgh area who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. Walk participants will also join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

“Each year, we are so excited by the Pittsburgh community that joins in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” said Gail Roddie-Hamlin, President and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Pennsylvania Chapter.  “For so many, this Walk is personal, and it provides the area an opportunity to show support for loved ones, friends, neighbors, colleagues and the health of the community. Funds raised will provide care and support services to the 400,000 residents of Pennsylvania living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, while also contributing to advancing critically-needed research.”

In addition to a 1 or 2.5 mile walk, participants will enjoy music by the Blues Devils and a tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.  Special guests in attendance include U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) and County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, as well as local personalities such as WPXI’s Joe Arena and Katherine Amenta, 96.1 KISS’s Tall Cathy and 94.5 3WS’s Jonny Hartwell.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.  As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.
