Squonk Opera Has Taken Over the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater

March 8^th, 2010 is the day that Squonk Opera has taken over the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater, bringing in boxes of exciting new set pieces and turning the theater into the space in which they will perform their newest work: Mayhem and Majesty.  Over the past eight months Squonk Opera has been in and out of the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater, bringing with them an unparalleled level of energy and creativity.  In November, they showed work-in-progress: Mostly Mayhem, and have used the audience feedback to tweak their upcoming performances.  Throughout the year they have given workshops to local artists on topics that Squonk is intimately familiar with: the creation of new work, writing grants for new work, marketing the final product, and touring it throughout the world.  They’ve worked creatively throughout the East Liberty community, including with the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater’s Youth Company in Residence: Alumni Theater Company, as well as with Hope Academy and with art students at Peabody High School.  Squonk Opera’s residency at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater has meant more than just space—it has been involvement, activity, and engagement.

MAYHEM AND MAJESTY explores the poetry of music making and the power of sound with camera jibs, projection puppets and kinetic machines–all part of Squonk’s award-winning multimedia canvas. The culmination of a unique, interactive residency at the Kelly Strayhorn, this production is a singular animated concert that indulges the Squonkers’ instincts for both shameless spectacle and abstraction. Pre-show mixers, post-show talk backs, and Pittsburgh student art created during the company’s residency add to the festive mania that is Squonk Opera! Squonk Opera is Artist-in-Residence at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater for the 2009-2010 series.
