15th Anniversary Year of Popular Meager Meal Event
The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Just Harvest, a Center for Action Against Hunger have announced the date for the 2010 Empty Bowls Dinner: The event will take place on March 7, 2010 at Rodef Shalom Congregation on Fifth Avenue in Oakland from 2 pm – 7 pm.
Empty Bowls is a signature Food Bank event where amateur and professional potters from all over the region’s schools and studios create and donate some 1200–1500 ceramic bowls each year. Restaurants and caterers donate bread and several hundred gallons of soup. Together they comprise a meager meal to remind people that there are thousands of “empty bowls” in our region every day. Then ticket-holders can take their chosen bowl home.
This year is the 15th Anniversary of Empty Bowls, which benefits both the Food Bank and Just Harvest. In its history, with some 13,000 bowls and 3,000 gallons of soup, Empty Bowls has raised more than $350,000 for the two organizations.
“We hope to make the 15th year the best ever,” said Joyce Rothermel, CEO of the Food Bank. “In this weak economy, the Food Bank and Just Harvest are busier than ever, and the awareness raised about hunger by Empty Bowls is as important as the funds.”
Besides the bowls and soup, Empty Bowls is known for its family-friendly atmosphere with children’s activities, local celebrity soup-servers, bake sale, silent auction of fine ceramic art, and even soup-to-go. Look for a celebrity-autographed bowls online auction preceding the event. Tickets will go on sale in January through the Food Bank’s and Just Harvest’s websites, pittsburghfoodbank.org and justharvest.org, respectively. ###
