Human trafficking and slavery happen not just across the globe, but also across the street-including right here in Pittsburgh. ”It’s the fastest-growing illegal crime in the world,” according to Diana Scimone, director of the Born 2 Fly Project to stop child trafficking. “And it’s the second-highest grossing illegal trade on earth, after drugs. You can sell a drug once, but you can sell a child over and over.” There are 27 million slaves around the world, including 100,000 in the US. “Some of them are just 4 years old,” Scimone says. Human trafficking happens in every major metropolitan area around the country, including Pittsburgh.
Scimone, whose work has taken her to more than 40 countries including Sudan, Thailand, India, and Zimbabwe, will be in Pittsburgh to teach a seminar about human trafficking-and how to stop it.
