Here are some highlights and accolades from 2008, a very productive year.
- New Choices/New Options The New Choices/New Options programs reported their statistics for the fiscal year 2007-2008 in August. 2,853 Pennsylvanians received career development instruction, individual support services and job placement assistance at 23 locations across the Commonwealth. Out of those individuals receiving support, 2, 123 individuals were placed in further training programs and/or jobs. Because many of the individuals served were on some type of government assistance, 20 programs tracked savings to the government of $2,539,593. These numbers reflect new participants only; many more individuals receive ongoing services.
- PA Working Wardrobe In Pittsburgh, PA Women Work has been privileged to serve Department of Welfare clients with employment and job interview clothing, as well as continuing this service to our other partner agencies. Through generous donations from many individuals and our corporate partners, such as Marsh/Mercer HR Consultants, Bank of New York Mellon, Equitable Resources, University of Pittsburgh, Chico’s and the Men’s Wearhouse, we are able to provide our clients in Pittsburgh and McKeesport with quality clothing. The extraordinary generosity has also enabled us to share clothing with our Philadelphia and Indiana programs. Since July of this year, we have provided work related clothing to over 835 individuals. We thank the many, many donors and volunteers who have helped in this effort.
- Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) In Pittsburgh and Indiana combined, the NAP program has allowed us to provide transportation assistance for 145 individuals as well as job placement assistance for 154 additional clients.
We are grateful to be able to provide these services in this time of economic need and send sincere thanks to our Board of Directors and our Corporate Advisory Committee. Please visit www.pawomenwork.org for more information on other PA Women Work programs, volunteer opportunities, ways to contribute and how to become a member of our Corporate Advisory Committee.

I was part of the new choices program in Juniata County and Huntingdon County. They are very good programs for those trying to get back into the workforce. Was also able to use the welfares “back to work, wardrobe” money. As long as you are working with the assistance office to help you better yourself, there are SO many endless possibilities. I know when I started in those programs I felt bad for using the system but they are there for everyone when needed! They really are great programs that the assistance offices of every county have!
