Women’s Center of Beaver County Works to Break the Cycle of Violence

Based on the firm belief that all individuals have the right to live free from violence, the Women’s Center is committed to promoting safety and independence, with the goal to reduce and eliminate the causes and effects of abuse.  We strive to educate the public and to provide shelter, counseling, support, advocacy and education to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Why do we talk about a “cycle” of violence?  Because we know that if domestic violence remains hidden and victims remain silent, the violence will happen again and again.  We know that children who grow up in violent homes and do not get help are at high risk for becoming abusers or victims.  To them, violence is seen as a normal way of life.  However, we also know that the cycle can be broken.  Children can grow up to be caring, healthy adults.  Women can make changes that lead to a better life.  We have seen it happen!  Recently, a resident of our shelter told her story.  Her boyfriend abused her, but she accepted it.  One night, while striking out at her, he hit their baby son.  She left him.  With a counselor she talked about her own violent childhood.  She did not want the same for her son.  After many months of counseling and support, she feels ready to break free from her ongoing cycle of violence.  Her message was: “Get help, believe in yourself and you can change your life.  It is hard work, but it can be done.”

You can help other young women to break their cycle of violence.  Here are a few ways you can do your part:  Promote prevention programs in your school district, discuss the issue with your teenagers, if you know someone affected by violence – listen and offer your support, and tell our legislators to fund services for victims!  With your help, together we can encourage other young women to break the silence and break the cycle of violence in our homes and our community!

Christmas is coming!  During the holidays, the Women’s Center offers the opportunity to adopt a family in need.  We also accept donations of gifts suitable for children.  Your generosity will help to make it a Merry Christmas for a family in Beaver County.
